Essential Oils and Migraines

The majority of physicians in the United States agreed that essential oils are a great therapy for migraines. Though many physicians don’t believe essential oils can completely eliminate migraines, they encourage their patients to use them in conjunction with traditional medications to reduce the frequency of their migraines and their severity.

Essential oils are a natural healing method that uses oils derived from plants to provide a therapeutic effect. Studies continue to be done to see how exactly these essential oils work, whether it is the scent of the oils or some chemical action provided by them. With all the unknown factors associated with essential oils, many doctors worry about them interacting with traditional drugs.

Doctors suggest keeping a few safety precautions in mind when you try using essential oils to relieve your migraines:

  • Discuss essential oils with your doctor before beginning them
  • Talk with an experienced aromatherapist.
  • When using essential oils with other medicines, watch for any adverse reactions.
  • Only buy pure essential oils that are stored in dark containers.
  • Use a diffuser or a carrier oil. These oils can irritate your body so they should never be directly applied to your skin

There are many ways you can use essential oils. You can simply inhale them several times throughout the day or use them in an aromatherapy diffuser. If you don’t have a diffuser, you can add the oils to a large bowl filled with hot water and inhale the aroma while you keep your eyes closed. Consult an experienced aromatherapist before using essential oils as massage oils, on your face, or in a carrier bath to make sure they are safe for such uses.

Once you have been cleared to use essential oils, some of the most popular ones recommended for migraines are: chamomile, marjoram, basil, ylang-yland, ginger, clary sage, sandalwood, eucalyptus, rosemary, peppermint, and lavender. After you realize the benefits of using essential oils for your migraines, you may never turn back!
